What is Pediatric Dentistry?
Pediatric Dentistry is a recognized specialty of the American Dental Association. A two year full-time residency is required after dental school. A pediatric dentist has specialized training in dental growth and development, behavior management, conscious sedation and special needs children.
Some of our goals are:
THE FIRST DENTAL VISIT
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit between one and two years of age.
On the young child, the first visit is usually done off the parents lap. On the first visit we will evaluate:
- Oral hygiene.
- Dental development and alignment.
- Soft tissue/oral cancer screen.
- Cavity check.
- Parental education with the emphasis on prevention.
When the young child is able to sit in the dental chair by themselves we will clean his or her teeth, apply professional strength fluoride and take cavity detecting x-rays. Children are generally four or five before they are ready for cleanings. It is important to see children from a young age to monitor oral health and help prevent dental problems before they happen.
