Oral Surgery Post Op Instructions
-
Have your child bite down on the gauze for the next 15 minutes. Very young or sedated children may also be given small specialized surgical gauze to help control the bleeding.
-
Have your child relax for the remainder of the day. Activity may break the clot and start the bleeding again. You will be given additional gauze and instructions on how to use it if bleeding continues.
-
Give your child a dose of pain medication when you get home. The anesthesia will keep your child numb for the next one to two hours. We want the pain medication working before the anesthia wears off.
-
Allow your child to eat ONLY soft foods for the rest of the day. Good foods to eat are soup, yogurt, eggs, popsicles, and shakes or smoothies. Eat only after the numbness has gone away.
DO:
-leave the extraction site alone
-watch your child so they do not bite their cheek or lip
-beginning tomorrow, begin brushing gently
DO NOT:
-encourage spitting (this will prolong bleeding time)
-brush in the extraction site for 24 hours
-drink through a straw for the next 24 hours
-drink soda for the rest of the day
